GUN RIGHTS BILL PASSES INDIANA SENATE

Palladium-Item

A bill that would allow Hoosier gun owners to keep guns in their locked vehicle at work won approval Tuesday by the Indiana Senate. Senate Bill 25, sponsored by state Sen. Johnny Nugent, R-Lawrenceburg, was approved by a 41-9 vote and moves to the Indiana House of Representatives for consideration.

"Allowing Hoosiers to exercise their 2nd Amendment right without being punished is one goal of this bill," Nugent said. "Another goal is to prevent businesses from terminating hard-working employees for storing their firearms in their locked vehicles during work hours."

The bill makes exceptions for school property, child care centers, domestic shelter facilities, correctional institutions, government properties and for a business located in a private residence. Nugent authored the bill after learning about workers in Oklahoma who were fired for having legal firearms in their locked vehicles in their workplace parking lot on the opening day of hunting season.

"Because of a company policy these workers, some who worked there for more than 20 years, were fired," Nugent said. "I would hate to see that same type of punishment that occurred in Oklahoma to happen to law-abiding gun owners in Indiana."
