Talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday told Democrats that their "stuff" will "boomerang" on them.
Their stuff being their attacks on President Donald Trump. The congressional hearings, the personal slams that he lies, or cheats, the so-far unsubstantiated claims of collusion with Russia, the wild claims about him being "unfit."
"I think that a lot of this stuff is starting to boomerang on the Democrats and nobody knows it yet," Limbaugh said.
One issue he cited was the announcement from Sen. Bernie Sanders he'll refuse to release his tax returns. Democrats for years have lashed out at Trump for making the same decision, and he based his on the fact his records were being audited.
"I think the Democrats are running a great risk of having this all backfire," Limbaugh said. "It may be some wishful thinking in there, I will admit, but there's also serious observation.
"We're never seen this kind of focus. On the surface it's irrational to listen to these people in the media every day explain their hatred for Donald Trump, it's completely irrational."
He speculated on what those attacks mean to real people.
"Over the last two years, whenever you watch any news, whenever it is, if it's five minutes here, 10 minutes there, a half hour there, whenever it is, the odds are you are going to be inundated with hatred for Donald Trump found in the mainstream media. You're gonna find an anchor, you're gonna find a panel, you're gonna find a guest, and they're gonna be creaming Donald Trump, ripping Trump one side up and down the wall," he said.
"If you read newspapers, if you read the internet, if you read published news, same thing. The odds are you're going to run into a never-ending diatribe against Donald Trump that is filled with never-ending criticism - some people might even think it hate. My question to you is, if that profile, if you can imagine yourself in that profile or imagine others in it, how does this affect them?"
He asked if voters are being persuaded that Trump is a "reprobate."
Do they think the media's right?
"Or do some of them say, 'Is there nothing else you people can talk about?' How many of them are getting fatigue over the media being singularly focused on criticizing Donald Trump."
He noted, "We've never had a sitting president the object of this much negative coverage. It's been close. But no sitting president has ever had 92 percent negative coverage every day 24/7 for over two years. What do you think the perception of this by casual news consumers is? Are they persuaded by it? Or do they get suspicious of it?"
He continued, "I believe that they're [Democrats] gonna overdo this, these congressional committees with their singular focus of trying to portray Trump as a reprobate criminal that has gotta be impeached.
"Then we're gonna have the presidential campaign on the Democrat side, which is gonna have 16 to 20 of these people trying to out-hate Trump and to out-extreme left-wing each other to the point that it's gonna become self-destructive. I think they're already down on that path."
Limbaugh raised the issue of Michael Cohen's platform in Congress, handed to him by Democrats, to call the president names.
"I mean, do you realize the scope of this hoax? Do you realize how much it has collapsed on them? Do you realize the extent to which it has fallen apart? Try if you can to remember your outrage and anger starting two years ago. You couldn't get away from these stories that Trump rigged, Trump stole, Trump colluded. We had anonymous sources from the most credible agencies - intelligence agencies, law enforcement agencies, all saying that the proof was there, it's just gonna take a little time to dig it up, and the media kept reporting it.
"And here we are two years later, and the star witness, the best they've got is a convicted liar going to jail in three months who cannot say that there was any Trump-Russia collusion. That's how far this has fallen apart, and that is how desperate they have become. And in all of this today, their star witness has yet to say or accuse or acknowledge any illegal activity by Donald Trump. I mean, this is one of the biggest explosions of a hoax."
