The majority of 2020 candidates called for mass gun control Saturday following the deadly shooting at an El Paso Walmart, which resulted in at least 20 fatalities and dozens of injuries.
Police responded to reports of an active shooter at the Cielo Vista Mall Saturday morning after a male suspect opened fire in the Walmart's parking lot before proceeding inside. At least 20 people were killed and dozens more injured, according to ABC News.
The gunman is in police custody, but El Paso Police Department Sgt. Robert Gomez said they have not yet determined a motive. The shooter was identified as Patrick Crusius from Allen, Texas outside of Dallas.
President Trump responded to the tragedy on Twitter: "Terrible shootings in ElPaso, Texas. Reports are very bad, many killed. Working with State and Local authorities, and Law Enforcement. Spoke to Governor to pledge total support of Federal Government. God be with you all!"
Many Democrat 2020 candidates responded to the mass shooting on social media, calling for gun control and urging Congress to take action.
"We must outlaw all assault style weapons for civilian use," Marianne Williamson (D) wrote. "Even then, there will still be millions of them on the street. Next we need to outlaw the manufacture and sale of the bullets that they carry."
"Far too many communities have suffered through tragedies like this already," Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) tweeted. "We must act now to end our country's gun violence epidemic."
"Sadly, after each of these tragedies the Senate does nothing," Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) echoed. "That has got to change."
Last week it was Gilroy. Today it's El Paso. How can our country tolerate this? My prayers are yet again with families who are grieving and my thanks are with the first responders, but that is not enough. We must act.

How many lives must be cut short? How many communities must be torn apart? It's past time we take action and end our gun violence epidemic.

My heart breaks for El Paso and those killed and injured by another mass shooting. This can't keep happening. It just can't. Every day Congress refuses to act and pass gun laws is a horrible omission of responsibility. This is a tragedy.

We need to elect a president who won't back down from taking on the @NRA to reduce the gun violence that plagues our country. We have the @NRA on the run in Washington State, and it's time to put them on the run in America.

This latest mass shooting, like all the others, highlights the fact that the police were powerless and unable to prevent or stop these attacks. What the left (Put the name of whatever politician or media outlet here) refuses to point out is that if the victims had guns to protect themselves, not only would have the assailants been more afraid to start shooting, but they would have been stopped far more quickly. Emergency 911 service is available almost everywhere in the U.S., and it was worthless against those armed attackers. And how often do the gun prohibitionists use whatever recent spate of murderous attacks on schools, businesses, community centers and churches as reasons for "gun control"? Each of these cases highlights just the opposite.
The unarmed victims of criminal attack and their families cannot get compensation from the city governments that failed to protect them in these terrible cases. At the same time, the prevailing laws and anti-gun culture made sure those victims were unarmed. Police help was too little, too late. Those murderous events do not prove the need for "gun control". They PROVE the need for an armed population. They also demonstrate the utter inability of the police to protect individuals from violent crime. Police typically investigate crimes after the fact -- they don't prevent very many crimes. And the laws in nearly every state say that the police don't even owe a duty to protect individual citizens. Citizens are on their own -- and the sooner they know it, the better. - J. Starfield
The El Paso police, which originally told the media the event was "gang-related terrorism" "walked back" that claim, according to media reports. You are watching the narrative being altered in real-time as the fake news media is trying to twist this event into the narrative they want. Namely, they want the shooter to be an immigrant-hating Trump supporter who watches InfoWars and has a membership with the NRA. Even if none of that is true, they are going to keep twisting the facts to get the narrative they want.
